Scuola Italiana Toscana Part 1: DOCG Appellations Print

Monday, October 22, 2007, 7.00 p.m.– 9.00 p.m.
Chelsea Club, 236 Metcalfe St. (at Somerset)

Ah, Toscana! Rolling hills covered with cypresses, small medieval villages, vineyards and stone country, houses ... and that dialect!! Did you know that in Tuscany, where the Italian language was created, locals ‘drop’ the letter ‘c’ when they speak? A word like ‘casa’ becomes ‘hasa’!

ImageGuild director Antonio Mauriello continues his educational series on Italian wines. This is the 4th chapter during which all Toscana’s DOCGs will be tasted. Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (is this made with the Montepulciano grape or with the Sangiovese grape?), Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Chianti Classico, Chianti (why are these two separate DOCGs?), Carmignano, and the newest addition, Morellino di Scansano.

A selection of cheeses will complement the tasting.

The next session in the coming year will cover the rest of Toscana: DOCs and IGTs, including the gems of Bolgheri, Maremma, and the SuperTuscans. Stay tuned!

Members and Guests: $55 + $3.30 (GST) = $58.30

The National Capital Sommelier Guild strongly supports moderate and responsible consumption of wine and spirits. Guild dinner events allow a designated driver to attend at a reduced price. The designated driver will not be served alcohol. Guild tasting events provide and encourage the use of spit buckets.
"Great wine is about nuance, surprise, subtlety, expression, qualities that keep you coming  back for another taste. Rejecting a wine because it is not big enough is like rejecting a  book because it is not long enough, or a piece of music because it is not loud enough."
