After the grueling winter we have been through, summer is a welcome change: swimming, sports, outdoor BBQs, and cool summer sippers. It’s time to put away the weighty reds and heartwarming fortified wines and bring out chilled unoaked Chardonnays, crisp Rieslings, and don’t forget the refreshing rosés. A favourite of mine is the Grange’s Trumpour’s Mill Rosé from Prince Edward County, Ontario. This 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay was formerly available only from the winery but was released for the first time through LCBO Vintages on May 24 at $14.95 (CSPC 055046). It is wonderful with barbecued cedar plank salmon.
Many thanks to outgoing Director Natale Lofaro who has stepped down after two years as Director due to other commitments. He will continue as organizer of the annual Mechoui, one of our most popular events. Welcome to Maureen Murphy, our newest addition to the Guild Board of Directors. Maureen brings an enthusiasm for wine and a wealth of experience to the Guild. She has traveled widely through wine regions of the world and is a past president of the Australian Wine Society. Also elected at the Annual General Meeting is Bill Ellis. Since November, Bill has filled the position vacated by James Bertrand, who retired in November. Bill also brings extensive experience to the Board having previously served with the Opimian Society. Watch for new and exciting events to be hosted by Bill and Maureen.
After two very busy months, we slow down a bit as we move towards July and August. Five events are scheduled in June including the third in our series of 15th Anniversary events on June 10. This features Canada’s top Sommelier Veronique Rivest. She is always entertaining, informative, and can be counted on to present an interesting lineup of wines. I hope to see you there.
The National Capital Sommelier Guild strongly supports moderate and responsible consumption of wine and spirits. Guild dinner events allow a designated driver to attend at a reduced price. The designated driver will not be served alcohol. Guild tasting events provide and encourage the use of spit buckets.
