ImageFirst, a huge thank you to Marc and Gertie Cavalier for 15 fabulous years of Mechoui. Unfortunately, this was the last Mechoui by the Cavaliers and by all accounts it was the best.

The afternoon started off with the following wines and Sheep cheeses:

White Wines
  • Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru, Alsace, $22.95
  • Sauvignon blanc, Kim Crawford, Marlborough, $19.95
  • Riesling Kabinett, Nahe, Germany, $21.95
  • Conundrum, Caymus, California, $26.95 Sheep Cheeses
  • Savino di Roma, Region Latium, $27.99/kg
  • Delizia di Sardegna, Region Sardinia, $24.99/ kg
  • Crotonese, Region Calabria, $23.99/kg
  • Pecorino Pepato, Region Sicily, $31.99/kg
ImageThe Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru by Anne Boeklin was the hit of the first flight with fabulous peach, citrus, and apple aromas and incredible mouthwatering acidity. The cheese flight was thoroughly enjoyed and a slight nod was given to the Delizia di Sardegna—it had incredible aromas akin to herbs of Province and garrigue—no doubt from the Sardinian pastures the sheep grazed on.

As always the main event was spit roasted lamb done in the Morroccan tradition. Four fabulous red were enjoyed with the lamb.

Red Wines
  • Rioja, Muga, $23.95
  • Cornas, Cave de Tain , $29.95
  • Shiraz, Peter Lehmann, Barossa Valley, $31.95
  • Zinfandel, 7 Deadly Zins, Lodi, $25.95

ImageThe Peter Lehmann Shiraz was the narrow favourite—this was classic Aussie Shiraz showed chocolate, Christmas cake, and very ripe plumy fruit. The evening concluded with Gertie’s fabulous desserts coupled with Moscato D’Asti, Ricossa, $14.95—a beautiful, aromatic, grapey, lightly fizzy dessert wine.

Our thanks ,once again, to Marc and Gertie Cavalier for a fabulous feast and fifteen great years.
